Google makes money with targeted advertisement. Their computers remember all your searches and, if you use gmail, all your mail. They claim to only use that information to find out what you want to buy. Do you trust them? Yahoo and Bing do it too, it's just business.

Facebook makes money by finding out who you are, and then advertising based on your personality. You don't control your Facebook page, Facebook does. Replacing Facebook with another social network is just trading one snooper for another.
Remember when blogs were cool? Well, they still are. You control how it looks, and everything else about it. It costs money to host, so the hosts treat you with respect.
